What is PeekSocial?

PeekSocial is a Facebook application that lets Peek users stay connected to Facebook. With PeekSocial, you can set your Facebook status directly from your Peek device so all your Facebook friends can see what you're up to. Peek Social also lets you see your friends' status updates or your own Facebook stream through periodically-delivered email messages. Once you register, you don't need to be logged into Facebook to use it.

Hey, I already get email updates from Facebook. How is PeekSocial different?

You can think of PeekSocial as a Facebook digest. PeekSocial collects your friends' status updates and everything in your facebook stream and creates an email message that's delivered to you on your Peek. It's a snapshot of your Facebook page delivered to your inbox. You can choose how often you receive updates when you register for the service.

How do I start using PeekSocial?

Get a Peek device! They're available online and at Target or RadioShack stores. Peek is all about email and text messaging. No hassles and no contracts!

What if I already have a Peek device?

Great! All you need to do is register for the PeekSocial service. Head to our starting page! This link will take you to Facebook, where the registration process takes place. You'll be asked to log into Facebook but, other than that, PeekSocial will not require any private/confidential information from you.

Why do I need to register to start using PeekSocial?

We need to create a link between your Peek email address and your Facebook account and the registration process lets us do that. Once you register, we can continue to keep you connected with Facebook even if you're logged out. PS: we don't store any of your private Facebook data.

What are these "additional permissions"? Sounds scary!

The benefit of our PeekSocial application is that you can "stay connected" to your Facebook community when you are not logged into Facebook. But Facebook wants to be sure that you approve that we here at Peek have permission to access your account when you are mobile. It's great that Facebook is concerned about applications doing only what YOU intend.

Specifically, to get your Facebook information on-the-go, we need the following Facebook permissions:

  • Status Update - allows PeekSocial to set your status (the "What's on your mind?" field)
  • Read Stream - allows PeekSocial to read your news stream items (the center column in the Facebook display)
  • Offline Access - allows PeekSocial to access your status and stream when you are not logged into Facebook

Which email address do I use when I register?

You'll need to use your primary email account when you register for PeekSocial. If you have only one email account on your Peek device, obviously that's your primary account. If you have multiple accounts on your Peek device, here's how to find your primary account.

What do you mean by PRIMARY email account?

If you have only one email account on your Peek device, then that account is your primary account.

If you have more than one account on your Peek device, you'll need to verify which is your primary account. If you've already tried to use the Set Status function on your Peek device, open your SENT folder and look for that message (you'll see SETSTATUS and some digits in the Subject line). Open that message, and note the "From" address. That address is your primary.

If you've never used the Set Status function, make an attempt now by pressing Shift-S on your Peek keyboard. If you don't have that feature on your device, please call Peek's friendly customer care staff and they'll help you get your device software updated. Enter a message in the status field and select SEND. That outgoing message will end up in your SENT folder. Use the directions above to discover your primary account.

I was registering and, half-way through it, SOMETHING happened! What do I do?

It's best to remove the PeekSocial application from your Facebook account, and then start the registration process again. Visit the Facebook Application Management Page and remove the PeekSocial application. Then return to the registration page to re-register.

How often can I set my Facebook status using my Peek?

As often as you like. Facebook might "throttle" your account if you set it too often, but we haven't seen that happen.

Can I disable the PeekSocial service?

Yes. You can temporarily disable the service by returning to the PeekSocial application on Facebook and selecting "Disable the Service" on the configuration screen. This turns off friend updates and will not allow you to set your own status. You can disable the friend status messages only by selecting NEVER as your update frequency option.

You can remove the PeekSocial service from your Facebook account completely by visiting Facebook's Application Management Page (requires you to login into Facebook).

I want my friend updates more often. How can I change that setting?

Currently, you can get your friend-status updates as often as every hour, or as little as once-per-day. You can change that setting on the PeekSocial Application Page on Facebook.

But I want MORE updates! More! More! More!

Give us a shout at feedback@getpeek.com.

Is there a way to reply to, or comment on, items I see in my friend status messages?

We're working on that now and we'll keep you posted!

Can I change my PeekSocial configuration from my Peek device? Specifically, can I enable/disable it?

That's another feature we're working on and we'll keep you posted!

How come the friend status messages don't show up in my regular email account (e.g., my Yahoo! email)?

PeekSocial is a feature of your Peek mobile device. We're delivering the friend status messages right to your device, hot off the press, no waiting.

Hey, I'm not getting my friend status emails!

When you registered for PeekSocial, you were asked how often you wanted to receive friend status emails. One option was NEVER. This is the way you turn off the friend status feature of PeekSocial. You haven't selected NEVER , have you? You might check your configuration - you can get updates as frequently as every hour.

I've got my update frequency set for every hour, but often I don't get an email

As you experience on Facebook itself, there's an ebb and flow in the posting of new material to your news feed. You've got some friends who post a lot; some not so much. We're checking for friend updates every hour, like clockwork. But, if there's no new news from your friends, we won't send you anything. This has a nice side-effect: you won't get empty emails during the night when you and (most of) your friends are sleeping.

I'm not enjoying the PeekSocial service at all! How do I quit?

For PeekSocial Facebook service, you can visit the Facebook Application Management Page to disable the PeekSocial service completely (requires you to login into Facebook). For PeekSocial Twitter serivce, you can visit the Twitter Application Connections page, locate the entry marked PeekSocial and click on "Revoke Access" (you'll need to log into Twitter, of course).

I unregistered, but now I want to register again

Sure, please do. Just head over to our registration page.

I'd like to request a new feature for PeekSocial - who can I talk to?

Drop us a line at feedback@getpeek.com. We'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Feeling especially suggestive? Check out our YouTellUs page!

Hey, PeekSocial is cool! What other applications can I get on my Peek?

We're glad you like PeekSocial. We think it's pretty cool too. We're looking at all sorts of things and hope to bring out some other helpful and fun applications in the near future. If you have any ideas or want to see what other people are thinking, check out our YouTellUs page!

I used Shift-S to set my status, but nothing happened on Facebook

Typically, this means that the email account you used when you registered for PeekSocial is not your "primary" Peek account. Please use these instructions to find your primary account. Once you know your primary account, please remove the PeekSocial application from your Facebook account (instructions here), then re-register for the PeekSocial service (instructions here).
